Islington 
 
The name of Islington is Saxon in origin, and it is believed some parts may have Roman origins. In the 14th century, the settlement grew around a confluence of highways: the Great North Road connecting to Highgate Hill via a toll gate, and Back Road lead to Smithfield Market, used by drovers. The 17th and 18th century saw the area known for market gardening, it’s rural atmosphere popular with visitors. The 19th century saw the area become known for its music halls and theatres, but by the mid-20th-century, and after extensive damage during World War Two, the area was largely run down. Extensive rebuilding in the 1960’s left the area with a number of large housing estates, and the subsequent gentrification of Islington during the 1990’s has made Islington a popular place to live.
